Tech Editing

What is it?

Tech editing is the process of reviewing a pattern to finalize it for publication. It does not usually include actual knitting of the pattern.

The process includes checking for:

  • grammar, spelling, punctuation, and typos

  • consistency in style and vocabulary

  • clarity in the instructions

  • math, including stitch counts

  • comparison of written instructions with charts (if included)

  • completeness (everything needed is included)

  • layout (pattern’s step-by-step is logical)

The Process

  1. Please send your document in a Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or PDF format, along with photos of finished item, charts or diagrams, and your style sheet (if you have one).

  2. I will review them and get back to you, in 24 hours, with a cost estimate and expected timeline. *Your first pattern edit may be discounted in exchange for a testimonial.

  3. I will note any errors and/or suggestions and return the document to you for your review.

  4. You can then let me know any other adjustments, and return it to me for a final review. We can communicate back and forth until the document is final to your satisfaction.

  5. I am usually quick to reply and greatly value good communication.

Testimonials

“I really enjoyed working with Marie! She is very thorough and a good communicator. I was especially impressed by how quickly she got back to me with comments on my pattern. She is very knowledgeable about proper wording and helped me notice inconsistencies that I had missed. As a first time pattern writer, she made me feel very comfortable and confident too. All in all, the process was very smooth and helpful.”

“Marie is very thorough and provided professional, well thought out recommendations for my pattern. It was well worth the investment to have her look over my pattern before it went out to my testers. I appreciate her hard work and will request her assistance in future projects.”

"I contacted Marie in a panic after my regular editor was unable to meet my deadline. She responded quickly and gave clear instructions for sending my work to her. She got to work right away and after a few questions, understood my writing style. She gave helpful suggestions to make my writing clearer and caught little inconsistencies in my work. I'm very happy with the work provided and feel confident releasing my pattern (plus, I'm now ahead of schedule). I highly recommend Marie; I've already sent over my next project."                                                 ~Laura @ Four Purls

"I really enjoyed working with you! I really appreciated the flexibility when I couldn’t get the pattern to you as early as planned and when I did send over the pattern, you had the edits back to me very quickly. Throughout the process you were very responsive, which I really liked and appreciated.

Your edit of my pattern was very thorough and you noticed mistakes that I would never have picked up - so thank you for that! I really appreciated that you reviewed my style sheet and noticed things in my pattern that didn’t match my style sheet. In summary, I’ve really enjoyed working with you and am very happy with your edit, and now I feel confident in launching my pattern."

"Marie did a fantastic job grading my sweater pattern and adding more sizes to the complex design. Her fees are reasonable and her attention to detail and accuracy is impressive. Working with her makes my job so much easier and I know we will be working together more in the future."
